Betrayed,

Angry,

and Insulted

by Tommy Garner

I love to write stories about successful hunting and fishing trips, taking kids and other folks on hunting, fishing, camping and hiking trips. I love the details of someone seeing a deer up close in the wilds for the first time, seeing a child chase a butterfly on the soft spring breeze or catching crawdads in the clear water streams near our home on our ranch. I am totally consumed with the joys of nature and I have a great passion for being alive. It is an honor to be able to experience the wonderful joys of life and then write about them for my readers to enjoy. This is not one of those days. Today I feel betrayed, angry, rebellious, and otherwise insulted.

As some of the sly politicians did a year ago when they presented a bill to demand the encoding of every bullet bought, sold and owned by anyone in each of twelve states, U.S. Representative Bobby Rush (Democrat-Ill,) introduced a bill on January 6, 2009 known as H.R. 45 Blair Holt's Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act of 2009 to "to provide for the implementation of a system of licensing for purchasers of certain firearms and for a record of sale system for those firearms and other purposes".

Before the presidential election, there were promises of change and it appears that the majority of our citizens were ready for some changes. What we did not know and were not told is that this would be one of the changes sought by the new administration. Actually, this issue was avoided by the quote "I respect gun owners rights". End of discussion before the election. Now with this bill having been drafted in its entirety AND presented for consideration to become law on January 6, we can clearly see that this is a change that if of major importance and emphasis to the new administration and it was in the long range planning and development stages, while gun owners were being wooed for votes by the subtle promise of "respect".

There is not enough space to get the complete proposal in this column for I will sum it up for you. If passed, EVERY handgun and EVERY semi-automatic firearm capable of being clip fed is to be registered with the Attorney General at the cost of twenty-five dollars. Then there is a renewal period where another fee of twenty-five dollars has to be paid to the Attorney General. This of course will most likely be an annual thing. So this means that for those of us who have multiple guns which "qualify", we will be paying hundreds of dollars each year along with being made to provide a change of address to the Attorney General should be move.

The guns that "qualify" for this category is of course any handgun, even my single shot Thompson Center Encore and any other handgun except antiques. The long guns that qualify (I love the way they use that word over and over in the document) are any semi-auto that is capable of being clip fed. Hmmm lets see....that little Ruger 10/22 that I use for plinking and general shooting recreation, my dad's old Remington 742, even the scatterguns like the 1100 Remington, that Browning BAR rifle, the Benelli R-1 rifle...any rifle or shotgun that can be or is fitted with a clip. The exception again is an antique.

I was under the impression that we were already required to register every gun which we buy from a dealer and undergo a background check. I went through that process just a few days ago when I purchased a new rifle for a charity auction. My and your firearms are already registered, but they are scattered over all of the states and many firearms dealers across the country. To make each and every one of them be registered with the Attorney General will transfer and assemble all records to one place where they are accessible to the government. If we sell a gun, we must sell it to someone who is "registered" according to the document.

Supposedly, this is being done to reduce the violent acts where guns are used (like a law abiding citizen who is not a criminal is going to whip out their old Browning A-5 and commit a crime with it). The true measure of this is another step in disarming of the American citizen, because as history has proven, criminals do not follow the law and this will not stop or even put a dent in armed crime in America. When it does not and the politicians see that they again have failed, they will then call for the surrender of all registered weapons. Think not? Look at some of the other countries who have been down this road. Each of them started with little steps in making gun owners jump through hoops, then they would tighten the noose a little more until the all out ban was eventually imposed. When this happened their crime rate skyrocketed because the criminals were now safe to rob, murder, rape, and plunder without worrying about getting shot in the process. They love it!

When this happens, there is one thing that is certain...only criminals and the government will have guns. This will render us completely helpless to defend ourselves, as it has the citizens in other countries.

The new administration is actually a more aggressive form of the Kennedy political machine that has sought to disarm the American public for decades. So while the focus is on repairing the broken economy, there is a great under current to make changes that Washington folks think needs to be made, like you and me not having the freedom to own and bear arms. LIke I said, I feel betrayed, angry, and insulted but not defeated. There is hope that some of our intelligent elected officials will see this for what it really is and will not support it into becoming law.
